Several Italian players are being investigated in a major betting scandal.
Sandro Tonali’s agent has confirmed his client is suffering from gambling addiction.
The Newcastle star was one of three players who left Italy’s training camp last week. Aston Villa winger Nicolo Zaniolo and Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli are also being investigated for alleged breach of rules.
“Sandro suffers of gambling addiction. He’s fighting to avoid that and I’m sure he will win this difficult game. He’s sad, still in shock,” Tonali’s agent Beppe Riso, said on Tuesday.
According to Riso, Tonali is ready to play for Newcastle in their upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Saturday. The 23-year-old could potentially receive a three-year ban from football. However, his cooperation will most likely see him secure a lighter sentence.
Riso added: “I hope this gambling addiction issue will help to save Sandro’s life as well as many other young guys affected by the same problem.
“Sandro understood that he has to focus on this issue and face gambling addiction with a strong, determined approach.”
A report from Daily Mail has claimed the authorities have a “long list” of Italian players to investigate in relation to the betting scandal.
The situation has shocked the Azzurri ahead of their Euro qualifier against England. Luciano Spalletti’s men are three points behind their opponents on the Group C table.
