Neymar put the Selecao ahead after a brilliant piece of buildup play, but Croatia came back into the game through Bruno Petkovic’s late equalizer.
Missed penalties by Rodrygo and Marquinhos then completed Brazil’s nightmare as they failed to reach the semi-finals.
Speaking after the game, Tite confirmed his decision to step down as Brazil’s manager.
“As I said, my cycle is over,” he said. “I said it over a year and a half ago. I’m a man of my word.”
Tite had vowed to leave the national team before and has decided to stick to his promise.
“I’m going until the end of the World Cup,” Tite said a year ago.
“I have no reason to lie here. I don’t want to win anyway. I’ve won everything in my career, the only thing missing is the World Cup.”
