The Arsenal legend has announced he will deactivate his social media accounts on Saturday morning.

Thierry Henry has vowed to quit social media on Saturday morning and will keep his accounts closed until online abuse is governed “with the same vigor and ferocity” as copyright infringements.

The 43-year-old, who recently vacated his role as manager of MLS side Montreal Impact, wants social media firms to be held accountable over online abuse.

Henry plans to keep himself off social media until the responsible organizations can prevent users from creating accounts intending to send harmful messages while protecting their identities at the same time.

“From tomorrow morning I will be removing myself from social media until the people in power are able to regulate their platforms with the same vigor and ferocity that they currently do when you infringe copyright…” Henry wrote on Instagram.

“The sheer volume of racism, bullying and resulting mental torture to individuals is too toxic to ignore. There HAS to be some accountability. It is far too easy to create an account, use it to bully and harass without consequence and still remain anonymous.

“Until this changes, I will be disabling my accounts across all social platforms. I’m hoping this happens soon.”

Henry’s stance comes after Manchester United midfielder Fred and Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham were subjected to racist abuse on Instagram last weekend.
