The cup holders may have moved one step closer to the semi-finals, but the manner of their victory didn’t overly impress Courtois.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said the club’s inability to beat Chelsea by a bigger margin on Wednesday left the players ‘bugged’.

Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio’s goals sealed a 2-0 home win. The first-leg result leaves Real Madrid in the hot seat for next Tuesday’s second and final game of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Chelsea.

However, with Chelsea down to 10 men for most of the second half after Ben Chilwell’s red card, Courtois was left frustrated by the team’s failure to inflict more damage on his former club.

“Every time you play a big knockout match, you’re left with the sensation that you could have, should have, killed the tie off,” the Belgian said after the final whistle.

“Chelsea nearly scored right, at the end. This is a good result, but we’re bugged by the fact that we didn’t score a third or even a fourth goal.

“I hope we don’t regret not having added another when we play again next week.”

Real Madrid will now visit Cadiz on Saturday in LaLiga before heading to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next Tuesday.
