Atletico Madrid performed well but the opponents were better and rightfully deserved the victory, admits Diego Simeone.

It was RB Leipzig who prevailed in an intense battle with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Atleti, as always, showed little determination in attack and chose to sit back even after finding themselves 1-0 down. It took until 70 minutes, a penalty, and the introduction of Joao Felix for them to open the scoring.

Their final blow came at the 88th minute when Tyler Adams, with the help of a deflection, sealed the win.

The match, for most parts, had one-way traffic as the German side continued to test the defensive strength of their Spanish opposition. If it wasn’t for Leipzig’s poor finishing, the scoreline would have perhaps been embarrassing for Atletico.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Diego Simeone insists his side gave their all but it just wasn’t enough.

“We gave it everything we had,” said Simeone, as per Goal.

“It was difficult for us to win the duels and they were faster. We haven’t been able to play the way we wanted. I liked Leipzig. They had great determination, enthusiasm, and freshness. That cost us.

“There are no excuses. We gave our best and made it to the quarter-finals. We are going out fairly and we have to congratulate our opponents.”
