Since the introduction of the English Premier League in 1992, there have been forty-nine football clubs that have played in the top English league.

Out of the forty-nine clubs, seven of them have won and raised the Premier League cup as winners:

  • Manchester United thirteen times
  • Chelsea five times
  • Manchester City five times
  • Arsenal three times
  • Blackburn Rovers once
  • Leicester City once
  • Liverpool once

Taking a glimpse at how English clubs faired in the English Premier League and European competitions during these last ten years, we can deduce that the top English clubs of the last decade include the following: Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspurs, Newcastle United, Everton, West Ham, and Leicester City.

At the very top of the best 10, we can put Manchester United. The “Red Devils” have won the Premier League more times than any other football club in England. Although they have had their ups and downs this season and trailing Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea in the English Premier League, we cannot discard the success and historical impact Manchester United has had on English football.

Under the managerial skills of the Scottish football genius Sir Alex Ferguson, they became one of the greatest British teams of all time and also garnered huge respect in Europe. Under Alex Ferguson’s watch, the Red Devils rose to great heights and were at par with illustrious teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and AC Milan. Thirteen Premier League titles plus three UEFA Champions League put them at the top 10 most successful clubs in England.

In the Alex Ferguson era, back when Manchester United was at the very pinnacle of English football, you would land a betting bonus and a win with your football bet slip. Albeit still a great team, they seem to have lost their path along the way. With various managers such as David Moyes, Jose Mourinho, Louis Van Gaal, and the recent ex-Man United player Ole Gunnar Solksajer taking the Manchester United coaching role, nobody seemed to fit Ferguson’s shoes. Will they find their way and path to football greatness again?

The arsenal football club, also known as the Gunners, has had their share of glory both in England and Europe. Under the leadership of the French manager Arsene Wenger, the Gunners implemented a frugality policy, which impacted the club’s performance. With the change of manager and coaching staff, Arsenal became more proactive and adventurous in the transfer market resulting in the club finishing within the top four in the English Premier League in recent years. Although currently not in the same standing as Manchester City and Liverpool, the Gunners consistently perform. The flair and attractive football they play make them one of England’s most-followed clubs. Historically, they can boast of having great names playing for the club like Thierry Henry, Tony Adams and Dennis Bergkamp.

Liverpool, the team for Merseyside, has become one of the best football clubs in England and Europe. The arrival of the German coach, Jurgen Klopp, formerly of the German team Borussia Dortmund, transformed the team to become a goal-scoring machine and achieved success. Apart from their titles, Liverpool football club possesses one of the most popular football anthems – “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – and probably the most heartfelt support. The Kop, as Liverpool’s supporters are known, provide that added value to the home games. The Merseyside team has won more trophies than any other English club, tallying the number to forty-nine. No wonder they were so successful when one considers the talented, world-class players who used to play and are playing for the club – Kevin Keegan, Kenny Daglish, Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane. In addition, to the success, trophies, and best players globally, Liverpool can also boast of having celebrity supporters like Daniel Craig (aka James Bond), Brad Pitt, Samuel L Jackson, Rihanna, and Liam Nelson.

Chelsea football club coming from the heart of England’s capital city, London, has during recent years evolved into one of the strongest teams in England and Europe. The UEFA Champions League holder, Chelsea, has become a force reckoned with in the Premier League. The team is fairing quite well in the Premier League, placing amongst the top four. The current situation in Ukraine and having Russian ownership has somewhat tarnished their reputation, which has had a ripple effect on the team’s performance. It needs to be seen whether Chelsea can navigate through this situation and remain one of England’s top clubs. It would be a shame to see this successful club crumble because of international politics and leave a good vacuum within the Premier League.

Manchester has provided two great clubs. Besides Manchester United, their cousins Manchester City have walked out of the shadows of their sporting rivals. Until a few years ago, the Citizens were modest and middle of the table club. Unlike their opponents, Manchester United, the team from the other side of Manchester, did not have the clout and strength to compete and aspire to the Premier League title, let alone be a recognized force in Europe. The change in ownership of the clubs some years back and the recruitment of the Spanish football guru, Pep Guardiola, transformed Manchester City from a mediocre team to one of the best teams in England and Europe. They are currently leading the pack at the top of the Premier League table and are a solid contender to win this year’s UEFA Champions League. Adding to their manager’s vast and skilful experience (he coached and managed big clubs in Europe like Barcelona and Bayern Munich), Manchester City has recruited a substantial number of talented players like De Bryne, Sterling Foden, and Cancelo. They will be the team to beat if any other club wants to win the English Premier League title this year.

Tottenham Hotspurs, commonly known as the Spurs, is another strong team having their home base in London. The arrival of the Italian coach Antonio Conte brought better organization, new tactics, and discipline to the team. Conte, who previously managed Juventus, Chelsea, Inter, and the Italian national team, is known for his football shrewdness and attacking mentality. The significant improvement in Tottenham Hotspurs’ results is reflected in their improved standing in the Premier League table. It will be no surprise to see the Spurs back playing top-notch football in Europe and vying for the Premiership title next season.

Other top clubs in England include Leicester City, West Ham, Everton, and Newcastle. Leicester City has already won the Premier League title once under the Italian manager Claudio Ranieri. West Ham is doing exceptionally well in the current season and is faring quite well on the table. Everton, known as the Toffees, can sometimes be a tough nut to crack. Probably their only challenge is consistency. If they manage to keep a constant graph, they may well be the surprising team next year. The team from the north, Newcastle United, is the team to keep a watchful eye on. The change in ownership has brought tons of funds to be used in the transfer market. Newcastle United can be the revelation team next season with the proper attention and appropriate selection process.
