The Portugal international put in a scintillating performance to help his side get off to a flying start in 2021-22.

Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United is “growing up” after they crushed Leeds United 5-1 in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Fernandes enjoyed a productive previous season for United, scoring 28 goals and supplying 17 assists, and he picked up right where he left off.

The midfielder broke the deadlock at Old Trafford at the half-hour mark, pulling Paul Pogba‘s through ball down with a delicate touch and sending a powerful right-footed shot into the net.

About ten minutes after the break he added a second, that time driving a left-footed shot from an acute angle from inside the box.

Fernandes ended the evening with a hat-trick and will hope to keep up his excellent form throughout the season.

“Every season I want to be better than the last one, so with every goal and performance I want to do better. I have started with three goals, but there is a long way to go,” he told BT Sport post-match.

“We know the quality of the players who come in now, the team was already good and we saw that last season, even though we did not achieve the trophies.

“The team is growing up and now we try to do better.

“The statement today was against Leeds now and the next game will be against Southampton, so we will focus by game. We can do something with this mentality.”
