It’s time to take a look at a stat that proves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not doing as terrible as people think as Man United’s coach.
Against Arsenal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coached his 100th game as Man United’s manager. After this number of games, few other coaches have done better than the Norwegian boss and we can even compare him to some of the Premier League’s best. However, the only important comparison we have to make is to Sir Alex Ferguson.
The new generations don’t know this but, the Scottish manager wasn’t having such a great time as the Red Devils’ boss during his initial 100 games at the wheel. He has numbers that are somewhat similar to Solskjaer’s and he eventually became the best club manager in football history. After 100 games managed at Man United, Sir Alex Ferguson had 48 victories, 31 draws, and 21 defeats.
These are nowhere near the numbers of a manager who would become one of the all-time greats. As an example, Jose Mourinho’s first 100 matches at the club were 62 wins, 23 losses, and 15 defeats.
How does Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fare after 100 games?
I hindsight, one would think that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time as Manchester United’s manager hasn’t been great. After 100 games managed, he’s got 55 wins, 24 losses, and 21 defeats. That is seven more victories than Sir Alex Ferguson. As we go through the new era of immediacy in world football, Manchester United supporters need to learn how to remain patient with their current manager. Only through this virtue was Sir Alex Ferguson able to achieve perfection as the Red Devils’ boss.
Sacking Solskjaer right now could interrupt a process that has many positive aspects still in development. Victories like the ones against PSG should serve them as the template of what the team is capable of doing. Although they still may not be title contenders, Manchester United has many reasons to think they are on the right path.
