The Manchester United star was a surprise omission from Spain’s squad for their UEFA Nations League games.

Spain manager Luis Enrique has insisted he has omitted David De Gea from his squad because of tactical reasons.

The former Barcelona coach has decided to go into La Roja’s upcoming games without the Manchester United keeper. Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon is Spain’s number one, while Brentford’s David Raya and Brighton’s Robert Sanchez are the other keepers in the squad.

The selection came as a surprise to many observers, given De Gea’s performances for United last season. The Spanish goalkeeper maintained his excellent form despite United’s struggles, saving them on several occasions.

However, Enrique says his three choices give him all he wants from that position.

He said: “What I am looking for is to have three starting goalkeepers and I think that right now I have them. Honestly, I wouldn’t have an issue with any of the three of them starting.

“For us, a goalkeeper has to start the moves. We need a goalkeeper who dominates the aerial game, their box, and for me, it’s what he transmits. I need the goalkeeper to transmit peace and calmness to me.

“That doesn’t mean they won’t make mistakes, errors are part of football, but I like what these three generate a lot.”
