Edinson Cavani was accused of racism by the FA after he used an endearment expression towards one of his friends on Instagram. Calling someone “negrito” (blackie) in South America is a very common expression but it’s viewed as racism in English-speaking countries. That’s exactly what Cavani didn’t understand when he used that expression publicly. As far as the FA goes, they just fined him €100,000 and a three-match ban for the incident.

This reminds us of the incident Luis Suarez had with Patrice Evra back in when he played at Liverpool. However, Cavani’s expression was nowhere near an insult and it was on his private social media account. Obviously, Manchester United reacted to Cavani’s punishment. The player will have to make an appeal by next week.

The FA’s statement in full.

Manchester United issued the FA’s statement about Edinson Cavani’s punishment: “Edinson Cavani has been suspended for three games, fined £100,000 and must complete face-to-face education after admitting a charge for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a social media post on Sunday 29 November 2020.

“A comment posted on the Manchester United FC striker’s Instagram page was insulting, abusive, improper, and brought the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3.1. The post also constitutes an ‘aggravated breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin. An independent Regulatory Commission was appointed to decide the sanction and its written reasons will be published in due course.“
