Let’s check out players who’ve made Premier League history in the peculiar category of scoring own goals.

Since the early days of the Premier League, own goals have been a source of both amusement and frustration for football fans. As of now, there have been over 1,000 own-goals in the Premier League’s history.

In this article, we’ll delve into the players who have contributed to this peculiar statistic with the most own goals.

Jamie Carragher (7)

Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend, is next on the list with seven own goals to his name. Unlike Dunne, Carragher’s own goals were spread out over his time with Liverpool, and he holds the record for being the youngest scorer on this list. His unfortunate day came in 1999 when he scored two own goals in a match against Manchester United, in front of the Kop.

Martin Skrtel (7)

Another Liverpool player, Martin Skrtel, managed to tally seven own goals in the Premier League. Impressively (or regrettably), he set a record for the most own goals in a single season during the 2013-14 campaign. Fortunately for Skrtel, his own goals didn’t have a significant impact on Liverpool‘s results, with the team winning three of the four games in which he scored for the opposition.

Phil Jagielka (7)

Phil Jagielka, who played for Sheffield United and Everton, joins Skrtel in the seventh own goal category. Jagielka’s own goal record spans over 14 years, with the first three occurring during his time at Sheffield United. Interestingly, he once had to step in as a goalkeeper when Sheffield United faced Arsenal due to an injury crisis and managed to secure a memorable victory against the Gunners.

Richard Dunne (10)

Richard Dunne is undoubtedly the unfortunate leader in this category, having scored a staggering 10 own goals during his Premier League career. Dunne, who played for Everton, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and QPR, holds a record he’d probably rather not be associated with. His own goal misadventures began in December 2004 during a match against West Brom while he was with Manchester City. Notably, Dunne never saw his team win when he scored an own goal, and many of these mishaps occurred in the last 15 minutes of matches.
