Which Premier League sides have suffered the most defeats in the competition?
Being consistent is one of the key traits of the biggest clubs in any competition.
Some clubs move from golden ages to tough periods more often than others, even getting relegated in the process.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t have Premier League champions in our list of the clubs with the most defeats in the English top-flight’s history.
The following list only covers the Premier League era, which started in 1992.
Rank | Team | Defeats |
1 | Everton | 425 |
2 | West Ham | 420 |
3 | Aston Villa | 396 |
4 | Newcastle | 389 |
5 | Southampton | 384 |
6 | Tottenham | 376 |
7 | Sundareland | 296 |
8 | Man City | 282 |
9 | Liverpool | 267 |
10 | Fulham | 261 |
West Ham and Everton have moved shoulder to shoulder on this list for the past few seasons. However, the Toffees’ difficult period under Frank Lampard has seen them move past West Ham on the ranking.
Sunderland are the only club on the list who are currently out of the competition.
The Black Cats suffered Premier League relegation at the end of the 2016-17 season. Continuing their horrible run, they slipped to League One the next campaign. After playing four seasons of third-tier football, Sunderland finally returned to the Championship for the 2022-23 campaign.
Manchester City are another interesting name on the list. Before securing a place among the Premier League’s “Top Six” in the early 2010s, City were mostly a mid-table side in the English top-flight.
The Citizens even suffered relegation at the end of the 2000-01 season but returned to the Premier League in the following campaign.
