The under-fire Dutchman spoke of his hopes for Manchester United after collecting an award at the Football Writers’ Association awards for northern managers.

Erik ten Hag is aiming for greater success at Manchester United after receiving an award at the FWA Northern Managers ceremony on Sunday.

The 53-year-old scooped an award after leading United to Carabao Cup glory last season. The title marked the end of the club’s six-year wait for silverware. They were also the runners-up in the FA Cup and finished third in the Premier League.

In his second season, Ten Hag has faced a much more difficult period. Yet, while results have not gone the way he would’ve liked, he is certain the club is going in the “right direction”.

“I’m sure we are in the right direction and I’m happy to be here and to get this reward,” Ten Hag said in his acceptance speech, as per MEN.

“What we achieved last year with the Carabao Cup, it was small, and we achieved an FA Cup final, which still hurts, but it’s not enough, but many managers and many players know, it’s not so often you win many trophies.

“But once you win such a trophy, you have to celebrate it because it’s a very special moment that is not given to so many. So we did that, and we are still really pleased with it, but it’s not enough at Manchester United.

“We have higher targets and we have to go and get there.”

For their next match, United will face FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. The game will take place in Denmark on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils go into the match in third place in Group A, with three points from three games. They are two points above the rock-bottom Copenhagen.

If Galatasaray cannot defeat Group A leaders Bayern Munich in the other fixture, United can climb into second place by beating Copenhagen.
