The Swiss were involved in the penalty shootouts in their second consecutive match but ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline this time.
Spain became the first team to book a place in the Euro 2020 semi-final after winning a match defined by big saves, even bigger misses, and a controversial red card.
90 minutes of action wasn’t enough to separate the two contestants, and neither was an additional 30 minutes despite Switzerland playing with 10 men for about the final three-quarters of an hour.
An own goal by Denis Zakaria put Spain on the front foot inside the first ten minutes of the match, and Xherdan Shaqiri scored his third goal of the tournament in the second half to bring his side back into the game.
Only a single Swiss player was able to find the back of the net in the penalty shootout that ensued as Fabian Schar and Manuel Akanji were denied by Unai Simon while Ruben Vargas skied his effort.
The Spaniards, on the other hand, had a poor start to the shootout as Sergio Busquets hit the post but they managed to get the job done, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the winning penalty.
Luis Enrique’s men will now go against Belgium or Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2020.
