The Dutch defender decided to join the Magpies amid interest from several other clubs.
Newly-signed Newcastle defender Sven Botman has opened up on his decision to join the Magpies despite serious interest from AC Milan.
Botman completed his transfer to St James’ Park on Monday, ending months of speculations over his future. According to English media, Newcastle sealed the transfer by offering a £40m to Lille.
However, the Magpies weren’t the only club interested in signing Botman. AC Milan even came close to finalizing a deal for the Dutchman last month, but the talks ultimately fell through.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Botman explained why he chose Newcastle over the Serie A champions.
“In the end, the beautiful project of Newcastle United in combination with playing in the Premier League was decisive,” he said.
“The latter has actually been a dream my whole life. AC Milan also gave me a good feeling, but Newcastle United felt just a little better in the end.”
Botman became the most expensive defender to have ever joined a non-top-six side in the Premier League. Asked about the pressure that comes with such a transfer, Botman responded: “This is how the football world has developed and how the transfer market works at the moment.
“I can’t help that. And hopefully, I’m still that sober boy from Badhoevedorp. That €40million does indicate how much Newcastle United wanted me.
“That gives me confidence and now it’s up to me to repay that.”
