Unable to realize his potential yet, the Germany international has dropped down the pecking order at Allianz Arena.

Julian Naglesmann refuses to rule out a potential exit for Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich but is hoping the defender can “get his engine revving again”.

Sule’s future at Bayern doesn’t seem guaranteed given his struggles – a combination of inconsistency issues and fitness problems – ever since joining the club from Hoffenheim back in 2017.

Spending a good amount of time on the bench, the 25-year-old center-back started in just six of the Bundesliga champions’ 38 league games last season.

He has been linked with a move away to Chelsea as he approaches the final year of his Bayern contract and the club supposedly unwilling to hand him an extension.

“If he has the insight to work on his deficits and now is getting a coach who has known him since the U16 team, I’m confident that he will get his engine revving again,” Nagelsmann told Bild.

‘I’ve already talked to him about that. He knows he has to do something. But I think very, very highly of him.

Asked about Sule’s contract situation, the Bayern boss responded: “I think it’s important to be completely transparent with the players.

“The players also need to understand the club’s perspective concerning the contractual situation.

“Niki’s contract expires next year and his last season was not especially happy. But he also has everything that a world-class central defender needs and that shouldn’t be forgotten.”
