The former Barcelona man pounced from close range to make sure his side regain their two-point lead at the top of the La Liga table.
Luis Suarez set a record for the best start at Atletico Madrid in the 21st century in the 2-1 win against Alaves.
An own goal from Felipe canceled out Marcos Llorente’s opener and with the scoreline still tied as the match entered into stoppage time, Alaves thought they could snatch a point from their home fixture.
Los Rojiblancos, however, were determined to extend their winning run to four games in a row, and they found a 90th-minute winner through Suarez.
The Uruguayan striker netted from close range with a simple tap-in after being picked up at the back post by Joao Felix.
With nine goals to his name now, he is now level with Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas as the best scorers in this La Liga campaign.
Suarez also has two assists, and with 11 goal contributions in as many games, he overtakes Radamel Falcao as the player to have the best start to his Atletico career this century.
“The best thing about today is how the team ended [the game], not getting nervous,” Diego Simeone told reporters after the match, via Marca.
“[Suarez’s] goal is a great goal. It’s where a No.9 has to be. We found it really difficult.”
