The Uruguayan marksman was yet again the difference maker as Atleti sealed a nervy victory at Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

Luis Suarez reached 500 career goals after netting the winner in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win over Alaves in La Liga.

Kieran Tripper’s first-time cross found the head of Suarez, who nodded the ball home in the 54th minute to give Atletico a slender victory.

It was the striker’s 19th league goal of the season, and he sits second to only former teammate Lionel Messi in the La Liga goalscoring charts.

The 34-year-old has joined Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Robert Lewandowski as the only five active players to hit the 500-goal mark. He has also become the first Uruguayan player to reach the landmark.

Ronaldo is the leading active goalscorer with 788 strikes to his name, Messi follows close with 759 goals. Ibrahimovic and Lewandowski, meanwhile, are far behind from the two titans with 570 and 541 goals respectively.

198 of his 500 goals came during the trophy-laden spell at FC Barcelona. 111 of those were scored at Ajax, 82 came in the Liverpool colors, while the Uruguay international has netted 63 times for his national side. For Groningen and Nacional, Suarez scored a combined 27 goals and he has 19 so far for Atletico.
