A number of Chelsea stars have improved their game under Thomas Tuchel but Edouard Mendy notably stands out from the pack.

Without exaggeration, Edouard Mendy is arguably Chelsea’s best signing of the summer.

The Blues spent more than £200m on signings last summer, with the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell coming in as ‘big name’ additions.

After such high-profile arrivals, the signing of Mendy from Rennes for a fee of £22m didn’t exactly bring much fanfare among Chelsea supporters.

Fast forward to the present and it’s perhaps a different story.

The goalkeeper might just have been the most consistent of all the signings. The numbers show just how influential the 29-year-old has been to the Blues ambitions.

In particular, Mendy has impressed under Thomas Tuchel.

Since Tuchel’s arrival in January, the goalkeeper has played 11 games, conceded just two goals, kept nine clean sheets and made 19 saves, as pointed out by a Chelsea-related Instagram account with username @FamousCFC.

That’s something to be proud of for any goalkeeper in the Premier League. Simply put, Mendy has done what he was brought in to do, to instil confidence behind the Blues back-line.

Kepa Arrizabalaga failed to make the most of his chances and it’s no surprise he has now been demoted to a second-choice option.

Arguably, Mendy has been the most consistent of the summer signings, with the German duo of Havertz and Werner yet to reach their peaks. The same can be said of Ziyech who suffered a rough patch but has recently started to impress.

Chilwell has performed well, but he has found himself in and out of the team under Tuchel’s five-at-the-back system.

Only Thiago Silva comes close to Mendy but recent injury struggles also means the Brazilian has had to watch on mostly from the sidelines since the start of 2021.
