After his comments against Spanish football referees, the federation decided to open a disciplinary file against Gerard Pique.

Gerard Pique tends to make comments that can hurt sensible people in football, the Spanish football federation took offense. It happened during an interview Pique gave to streamer DJMariio, the Barcelona defender accused most referees are Real Madrid supporters. Not that supporting any club is wrong but as a referee, you simply can’t show your colors. Clearly, this is an idea that many Barcelona supporters have against Los Blancos.

As a result, Marca reported the Spanish football federation decided to open a disciplinary file against the defender. In his comments, Pique referred to VAR technology as just another way to help Real Madrid in controversial decisions. Suggesting that referees used it in order to get more protection from any type of consequence to a bad call. This wasn’t taken lightly by the federation and they decided to act upon his statements.

What did Pique say, exactly?

During a one-on-one interview with DjMaRiio, this is what Pique said about the Spanish referees: “The previous La Liga run is the most excruciating I’ve ever seen. That game in San Sebastian (between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid) with four controversial calls and all in Real Madrid’s favor. Some things that with VAR, are completely impossible to justify. In San Mames too…

“You are too used to getting these calls and when you don’t… The other day, a former referee said that 85% of refs are Real Madrid supporters. How on earth aren’t they inclined to call in Real Madrid’s favor? Even if they don’t mean it, how aren’t they pulling for their side? I respect referees and their profession. We all know they try to do the best possible job, but there will always come moments of doubt…”
