Let’s take a look at the player ratings from the semi-final match that took place at Eden Park in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Spain reached the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history by claiming a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Sweden on Tuesday.
The semi-final match got off to a sluggish start in Auckland. Both teams were evenly matched, but goal opportunities were rare. There were only five shots in total during the first half. Try as they might, Spain couldn’t break the Swedish defense, even with most of the possession.
It was a similar story for much of the second half until late in the game. Substitute Celeste Paralluelo Ayingono preyed on a rare relapse in Sweden’s defense. On the rebound, she sent the ball into the far bottom corner to hand Spain the lead.
The strike burst the game into life. Sweden equalized seven minutes later through Rebecka Blomqvist’s header. But Spain were undeterred. They got straight back to business and went back ahead when Olga Carmona fired the ball into the Swedish goal.
The Real Madrid left-back’s goal sealed a 2-1 win and sent Spain through to the final. They’ll now face either England or tournament co-hosts Australia on Sunday at Stadium Australia.
