Spain found a wonderful start to the World Cup by dismantling their South American opponents.
Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0 in their World Cup game on Wednesday. La Roja reached the top of the Group E table by claiming their biggest-ever win in the tournament.
A statement victory!
Similar to their wonderful performances in the UEFA Nations League earlier this year, Spain started off by quickly dominating the possession.
The pace of La Roja’s attacks soon became unbearable for Costa Rica, with Dani Olmo breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute.
Two more goals from Marco Asensio and Ferran Torres made it 3-0 before half-time. But that wasn’t the end of Costa Rica’s horrible night.
Spain restarted their attacks as soon as the second period started, while Costa Rica struggled to maintain their defensive pressing.
Another awful piece of defending led to Torres’ second goal of the night before Gavi completed his fantastic performance with a perfect volley in the 74th minute.
Spain kept on attacking despite being ahead 5-0, with their newly subbed-in players being eager to add their names to the scoresheet.
Carlos Soler made it 6-0 from close range in the 90th minute before Alvaro Morata completed Costa Rica’s humiliation two minutes later.
Spain claim the top spot on the Group E table with a victory that puts them among the absolute top favourites to claim the title.
On Sunday, La Roja will return to action to face Germany while Costa Rica meet Japan.
