A brilliant first-half display was enough for Southampton to beat their powerful rivals.

Southampton defeated Manchester City 2-0 in their EFL Cup on Wednesday. An underwhelming display from Pep Guardiola’s side saw the Saints eliminate them from the tournament.

Man City are out of EFL Cup!

Despite taking control over the possession, City clearly struggled to establish their attacking rhythm early on. The Saints effectively covered the area between their lines while appearing deadly on the counter-attacks.

Following a quick run from the right flank, Lyanco’s precise low cross found Sekou Mara, who smashed the ball into the back of the net with a sublime volley.

Only five minutes after the opener, Southampton stunned their opponents with another fantastic goal. Moussa Djenepo noticed Stefan Ortega’s distance from the goal line and punished him with a wonderful long-range shot.

Having doubled their lead before half-time, Southampton prepared for City’s attacking efforts in the second period.

Guardiola brought in Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Nathan Ake, and Manuel Akanji after the break. The changes, however, had little impact on the course of the game.

The Citizens completely dominated the possession throughout the second period. But Southampton’s relentless pressure prevented them from making any serious chances.

City ended the game without a shot on target as Southampton reached the EFL Cup semi-finals with their fantastic display.
