St. Mary’s Stadium is where Liverpool had to play Southampton in a new Premier League match on Monday. We have the player ratings.
The Premier League continued today with a Monday Night Football match between Liverpool and Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium. Jurgen Klopp’s side had been holding on to the top of the table for far too long with many injured players. It was only a matter of time before they got a negative result that took it away from them. On their visit to the Saints, the table was set for a defeat that was already in the cards for them.
The winning goal that made it happen was an early effort from Daniel Ings, who scored against his former club. It all took place before the first five minutes of the match during a set-piece in which he lobbed the ball over Alisson’s head. Trent Alexander-Arnold displayed some poor defending when Ings scored the goal. It was enough for the Saints to hold on to this result for the rest of the game.
Liverpool’s front three were dismal today.
They can’t do everything right all the time. Today, Liverpool’s star trio wasn’t able to score a single goal against a solid Southampton defense. Despite having some interesting chances to get that equalizer, none of them was able to find the ideal moment to score.
This result gives Manchester United the opportunity to take the Premier League’s top spot on the table if they beat Burnley in the next fixture. But first, they have a Carabao Cup semifinal match to play on Wednesday. The Red Devils also continue their FA Cup journey next weekend against Watford before getting a crack at the Premier League’s top spot.
