Let’s take a look at the player ratings from the Group G FIFA Women’s World Cup match at the Wellington Regional Stadium.
South Africa made the last-16 for the first time in Women’s World Cup history. In an epic Group G finale, they came from behind to beat Italy 3-2.
Arianna Caruso put Italy ahead with an early penalty in Wellington. But South Africa fought back with determination and heart. Benedetta Orsi’s own goal put the South Africans back into the game before Hildah Magaia’s stunning second-half goal handed them the lead.
Caruso pegged one back for Italy with a close-range finish for her second goal. It appeared to settle the game at 2-2, putting the Italians in the knockouts. But in the second minute of added time, Thembi Kgatlana scored with a beautiful finish. Her strike sealed South Africa’s first Women’s World Cup victory, and a spot in the last-16.
South Africa will now turn their focus to the knockouts after a second-place finish in Group G. They finished with four points from three games. Italy ended up third, one point behind their foes.
Group E winners Netherlands will be South Africa’s last-16 opponents. The game will take place in Sydney this Sunday.
