Lionel Messi’s Argentina have a FIFA World Cup final on the horizon, and with that comes the potential for Lionel Messi to secure the crowning moment of his career.

The widely acclaimed greatest footballer of all time has already captured many of football’s greatest prizes and recorded an endless amount of iconic performances at the highest level but a World Cup triumph would top them all.

The chance to complete football

Messi spent the majority of his career at FC Barcelona and so most of his iconic moments came for the Catalan side. Under numerous managers, he won ten La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues, so all that is missing now is a FIFA World Cup. Argentina will meet a strong French team in the final despite their long list of injury absences. The likes of Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud especially have been in stunning form. In Argentina vs France betting, the 2014 finalists are offered at 4/5 to lift the trophy, but as the sides are so evenly matched, it’s set to be an incredibly tight contest.

Messi can essentially complete football if he lifts the FIFA World Cup, but what were some of his landmark moments so far?

Most iconic moment

Messi’s most iconic moment came against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final of 2015. He scored an exceptional solo goal in which he turned defender Jerome Boateng inside out after he received the ball from Ivan Rakitic. After felling Boateng, he placed a spectacular effort over the head of Manuel Neuer. The clip still circulates on social media and serves as a reminder of the ridiculous talent Lionel Messi possesses.

Winning the treble

Messi won four UCL titles with Barcelona but the most impressive came in the campaign concluding against Juventus as the Catalan side completed the treble. It was arguably the peak of Messi’s career as he had the perfect blend of creativity and explosiveness to take on defenders and score goals himself. Having played alongside Neymar Jr and Luis Suarez, it is no surprise that Messi in the mid-2010s produced the most exciting football the world has seen from him. The attacking trio regularly dispatched sides with ease.

Copa America victory

Messi had to wait a long time for his first international success, but it came on a fitting occasion against huge rivals Brazil. The Argentine legend had fallen short for his country several times before, including dramatic penalty shootout defeats. But on the day that Argentina met Brazil in the Copa America final in 2o21, Messi offered a speech to his teammates in which he stated that they would claim victory and take the trophy back to Argentina. Messi’s claim become true as Angel Di Maria’s finish was the sole goal in the game that made them champions of South America.

Messi has brought the eyes of the world onto himself countless times throughout his career, but no occasion would compare to a World Cup victory if the Paris Saint-Germain star can lead his side to conquer France in the final.
