A last-gasp equalizer from Everton on Saturday cost the Red Devils valuable points in the Premier League title race.
Manchester United cannot be considered title contenders, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who reckons the media have exaggerated the club’s prospects.
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury-time equalizer denied United a chance to move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table. They instead had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford.
Aside from a two-point deficit to the league leaders, Solskjaer’s side have also played two more matches. Hopes of a first title since 2013, therefore, appears bleak for now.
“We are not talking about winning titles,” Red Devils boss Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “We have come a long way, this team.
“We should not even be considered as title chasers. That is more talk that you (the media) are saying.
“We need to be better as a team and see where we end up. Going forward, we need to stop conceding easy goals.”
Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes had put United in front against Everton before the break. However, David de Gea’s error in goal allowed Abdoulaye Doucoure to score for the visitors in the second half. James Rodriguez later leveled the scoreline in the 52nd-minute to complete a quick turnaround.
And while Scott McTominay’s header restored United’s lead, Calvert-Lewin capitalized on some poor defensive play to snatch a dramatic point for Everton.
Now Solskjaer must turn his attention on to Tuesday for an FA Cup fifth-round clash with West Ham at Old Trafford.
