The veteran striker has proved his quality in the limited minutes handed since joining the Red Devils on a one-year deal in October.

Manchester United intend to trigger the extension option on Edinson Cavani’s contract, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Cavani was one of the three signings the Red Devils announced on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

The South American was declared a ‘panic buy’ owing to the timing of the transfer and the fact that the club had signed him after failing to land Jadon Sancho despite being on the Borussia Dortmund star’s chase for almost the entirety of the summer.

Only one start has been made by the former Paris Saint-Germain man in the Premier League, but he has impressed whenever coming off the bench.

He put on an inspiring display in the 3-2 win against Southampton last month as he scored twice after coming on in the second half to produce a turnaround.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Wolves clash, Solskjaer said the 33-year-old is still valuable and that the club want to extend his stay for a further 12 months.

“At the moment, it looks like he has a few years left in him so I wouldn’t say anything else,” Solskjaer said, via ESPN. “He has made a great impact when he has come here.

“Let’s focus on improving everyone but he has a few years left in him. He is so meticulous and professional, his habits and everything about him, shows why he has had the career he has. Even at the age he is now he is one of the fittest players we have got.”
