Despite reports strongly linking Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester City, a remarkable return to Old Trafford could yet be possible.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened the door for Cristiano Ronaldo to make a sensational return to Manchester United.

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed Ronaldo’s plans to leave Turin now. The forward’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is locked in talks with Manchester City for a two-year contract. The Citizens want to sign him on a free transfer, although it seems they’ll have no choice but to pay Juventus between €28m-€30m.

However, Solskjaer has refused to rule out a United bid for ‘the greatest player of all time’.

“Cristiano is a legend of the club, and the greatest player of all time, if you ask me,” said Solskjaer in a press conference on Friday afternoon.

“I was fortunate enough to play with him. I coached him when I got my job. He almost retired me because of that Wolves game when I got injured he kept switching sides but he’s such a tremendous human being. Let’s see what happens.”

Man United in direct contact with Jorge Mendes

According to Fabrizio Romano, United approached Mendes on Thursday night and are ‘seriously interested’ in making a rival bid for their former star player. Solskjaer has also revealed Bruno Fernandes is discussing a return with his Portugal teammate.

The Red Devils boss added: “I didn’t think he’d leave Juventus. We’ve always had good communication and I know Bruno [Fernandes] has been talking to him. He knows we’re here.

“When you are [Lionel] Messi, Ronaldo, [Paul] Pogba or Bruno, you have to read a lot about yourself. Let’s see what happens with Cristiano, because he is a legend of this club.”
