Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained a certain motivation for his side against Roma in the Europa League semifinals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping his side can use their previous semi-final heartbreaks as motivation to win their tie against Roma.

The Red Devils find themselves in yet another semifinal and this time, it is Roma that stands in their way as they aim to reach the final of a major competition for the first time in three years.

For Solksjaer, this will be his fifth semi-final since he took charge of United and it has been a familiar disappointment on domestic and continental stage.

United lost to eventual winners Sevilla at this stage of the Europa League last season and the Red Devils’ boss is hopeful his side have built some motivation from those defeats.

“Well we’re coming into this final stretch of the season in good form,” he said to the club’s website.

“We’ve really built momentum and of course those setbacks and disappointments in the semis are more used as a motivation this time. We know how it feels to be so close and this time we’re going to give everything. I know that about these players anyway, they always give us absolutely everything they’ve got.”

Speaking on previous disappointments, Solskjaer added: “I thought the performance was excellent and we were unlucky not to score goals. Of course Roma as well went out against Sevilla so I think both teams feel the disappointment. When you lose to the winners then you’re close. When it’s the last game of the season like it was last season it’s going to stick in your mind of course. We’ve used it as a point of reference that if we go further we’ve improved.”
