Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is adamant new signing Donny van de Beek will play a key role for Manchester United despite a stuttering start to his Old Trafford life.

Van de Beek joined Manchester United from Ajax in a deal worth £35million this summer.

Despite still waiting for his first league start, the Dutch midfielder opened his account after coming in as a late substitute in a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace.

The 23-year-old also made a cameo appearance in the Red Devils’ 2-1 Champions League triumph over PSG on Tuesday.

Solskjaer is, however, confident Van de Beek will have a lot to offer to the red jersey throughout the season, insisting the Netherlands international already left a positive impression.

“Donny [Van de Beek] is fit enough,” Solskjaer said, as relayed by the Metro.

“Of course, it’s competition for places. It’s giving him time to settle in and adjust to his new teammates, a new league.

“He’s absolutely a top footballer, a top personality, so humble and hard-working but also eager to play more.

“As I’ve said so many times, you’ll see him throughout the season, it’s going to be a long, long season, and he’s impressed me.”

Competition for places at Old Trafford is fierce. Van de Beek has to fight against the likes of Fred, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, and Nemanja Matic for a place in the starting XI.

But, with Pogba’s struggling with form in the early stage of the season, the talented Dutchman should have no problems finding regular game time.
