Chris Smalling opened up on his eagerness to get back in action with Roma after making his first appearance of the season.

AS Roma could take only a point from their Europa League matchday 2 outing as they were held to a goalless draw at home against CSKA Sofia.

The result might not have been a very desirable one but the match marked a special occasion for one of their players – Chris Smalling, who had been out of action since the end of July, played his first match of the season.

The English center-back signed enjoyed a remarkable 2019/20 season with the Italian side while on loan from Manchester United. His move, after prolonged negotiations, was made permanent during the summer transfer window.

“I’ve been waiting all summer to get back out there,” he told Sky Sport Italia after the full-time whistle on Thursday night, via Football Italia.

“It’s a pleasure to be back with the team, although we are disappointed not to have the full three points.

“I trained well in the last couple of days and I’m getting back into shape. I’m not at my best yet, but I’m sure I’ll get there very soon.”

Smalling spent a decade at Old Trafford prior to walking out the exit door earlier this year. The defender won two Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League titles, among other honors, with Man United.
