Van Dijk’s Late Header Against West Ham Stands Out in a Season Full of Highs
With Liverpool just one point away from securing the Premier League title, head coach Arne Slot believes the most memorable moment of the season may still be to come. Reflecting on the campaign so far, Slot highlighted the team’s fighting spirit and clutch performances—but one moment, in particular, remains etched in his memory.
Speaking ahead of a potentially decisive final stretch, Slot admitted that Virgil van Dijk’s late winner against West Ham United at Anfield remains a standout.
“Hopefully the best moment is still ahead of us,” said the Dutchman. “But there have been special moments already. One of them was definitely when Virgil scored that header against West Ham right at the end.”
Liverpool had just conceded an equaliser minutes earlier, with the game seemingly slipping away. But instead of settling, the team—and the fans—responded immediately. Just three minutes after West Ham made it 1-1, Van Dijk powered home a header to restore the lead and send the home crowd into raptures.
“You could feel the shift inside the stadium,” Slot added. “After they equalised, everyone probably feared the worst, maybe even that we wouldn’t hold onto the draw. But then the team stepped up, the fans stepped up. That moment—when we got the corner and Virgil scored—was electric.”
Players Delivering When It Matters Most
Slot was also quick to praise several other big-game contributions from his squad throughout the season. He pointed to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late goal against Leicester City and Darwin Núñez’s decisive strike in a tightly contested away game at Brentford.
“Big players always show up in big moments,” he said. “Trent had that brilliant moment 10 minutes from time against Leicester. And away at Brentford, 90 minutes in, it was 0–0 and Darwin popped up with the winner—Trent assisted that one too.”
Slot’s comments reflect the broader narrative of Liverpool’s campaign: a team that has consistently found answers in the most demanding situations.
One Step Away from Glory
Now, with just five matches remaining, Liverpool are on the cusp of another Premier League title. For Slot, it’s clear that while the season has already delivered several unforgettable moments, the ultimate prize is still within reach.
“The emotions after that West Ham goal—Virgil’s reaction, the roar from the crowd, the celebrations on the bench—that was a beautiful moment,” he said. “But I really hope the most beautiful one is still to come.”
