The Bologna manager continued his job despite being diagnosed with leukaemia in 2019.

Former Serbia international Sinisa Mihajlovic has died at the age of 53.

Mihajlovic established himself as one of the best defenders of European football in the early 90s.

Having already won the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade in 1991, Mihajlovic started his Serie A career with a short spell at Roma.

He then moved to Sampdoria, where he spent the next four seasons. But Mihajlovic’s success in Italian football started with a transfer to Lazio in 1998.

The Serbian star clinched his first Scudetto and two Coppa Italia trophies at Lazio before joining Inter as his last club. With the Nerazzurri, Mihajlovic won another Serie A title and claimed two more Coppa Italia cups.

The Serie A legend then started his managerial career in the mid-2000s, which saw him coach Bologna as his last job.

Despite being diagnosed with leukaemia in 2019, Mihajlovic stayed in charge of the Italian side until September this year. He sadly lost his battle with the disease on Friday.

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma paid tribute to his former boss with a social media statement.

“You’ve always been a fighter and I know how much you fought,” he wrote on Instagram, adding a picture of Mihajlovic hugging him.

“I will forever thank you for believing in me and for everything you told me since the first day we met. You will forever be in my heart. Goodbye, mister.”
