Manchester United were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men failed to convert their chances.

Sevilla continued their progression in the Europa League. It is the sixth time that they have arrived at this stage and remain unbeaten.

However, they had Manchester United players to thank for this time. Despite enjoying the bulk of scoring chances, they failed to hit the back of the net and were undone as a result.

It was the Red Devils who opened the scoring from the spot. They were given the penalty after the referee had played the advantage of a late challenge on Marcus Rashford.

United’s Penaldinho, Bruno Fernandes, did not hesitate from 12 yards out and gave them the lead.

Sevilla upped the tempo and enjoyed the bulk of possession. They created more dangerous chances and were duly rewarded in the 26th minute.

Sergio Reguilon squared the ball in from the right flank. It was met by the rushing Suso, who was not picked up by Brandon Williams. Suso’s powerful shot hit the back of the net as David de Gea’s dived for no apparent reason.

It was 1-1 by half-time. United were the more threatening side after the restart. However, they failed to hit the back of the net thanks to an inspired performance by Yassine Bounou.

Sevilla were less forgiving. With 12 minutes remaining in the fixture, Jesus Navas ran on the right-wing. The former Manchester City man sent a cross in. Victor Lindelof could have put the ball out but didn’t. It fell to Luuk de Jong, who easily tapped it in.

The Red Devils huffed and puffed, but could not pierce through Sevilla’s defense. They become the latest English casualty in European competitions. It was crosstown rivals, Manchester City yesterday and they have kept the trend going.
