Quique Setien insists his Barcelona fate had been decided before the embarrassing 8-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich.

After relieving Ernesto Valverde of his responsibilities, FC Barcelona decided to give their managerial reins to Quique Setien – and the decision was not a very welcoming one right from the start.

Valverde, though managing to deliver on the domestic front, had struggled in the Champions League in his three-year spell. And it was doubted that his successor, who had nothing to show for his coaching career when he was appointed, was the right man to lead Barca to continental success.

Setien’s drastically failed to shine during his short stint as the club endured their first trophyless season in 12 years under him.

The Blaugranas surrendered the La Liga title to bitter rivals Real Madrid while exited the Champions League early following an 8-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

The thrashing marked the lowest point of the Spaniard’s spell at Camp Nou, but he maintains he would have been dismissed regardless of the outcome.

“You end up tremendously damaged, you go into Barcelona history with that defeat,” Setien told former Spain head coach Vicente del Bosque in an interview with El Pais

“I take my share of the blame. All the same, one day I will write about it. After my sacking, I found out that the decision had been made since before the 8-2. I heard about everything.”
