The former Real Madrid and Spain captain issued an apology to Sevilla supporters after rejoining his boyhood team.

Sergio Ramos is making amends with Sevilla fans upon re-signing for the LaLiga club.

On Monday, Ramos completed a free transfer to Sevilla on a one-year deal. He reportedly rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to return to last season’s Europa League winners, even opting for a pay cut.

Now, after years of battles and offensive gestures that didn’t sit well with Sevilla fanbase in the past, Ramos made a video apology. In it, he acknowledged he’s made mistakes and apologized for any offense his past actions may have had.

“18 years have passed since I left,” Ramos said following his unveiling.

“I think I’ve made mistakes. I want to take the opportunity to apologize and apologize to any Sevilla fan who was offended by the things and gestures I may have done at the time. I believe we are all in the same boat, we are all from the same family. We have too many people outside to fight amongst ourselves.”

Why did Ramos return?

According to Mundo Deportivo, Ramos had two lucrative offers. Galatasaray tabled an €11 million bid for him to spend a season in Turkey. In Saudi Arabia, he could’ve earned €20 million per year had he joined Al Ittihad.

Yet, the Spaniard chose his hometown club instead for a salary worth a little over €2 million per season.

“It was not only a debt that I had with myself but also with my family, with my grandfather that made me a Sevilla supporter since I was little, with my father…It didn’t make sense to take another direction,” Ramos explained.

“I hope to see you very soon. I’m here to give my best and try to achieve my objectives with the team.”

Sevilla will return to action on September 17 in a home game against Las Palmas. They sit bottom in LaLiga this season, having lost their first three matches of the campaign.
