As a way to respond about the whole Leo Messi transfer saga, Sergi Roberto knows this could be his final year but he hopes he can stay.
Everybody has the idea that Leo Messi started his final season as a Barcelona player yesterday, but Sergi Roberto remains hopeful. The Catalan player lived the whole drama up close and he is one of the first team players to talk about it.
At first, there was a certain feeling of discomfort coming from the dressing room players. Some of them didn’t appreciate getting indirectly called out by Messi. However, all of them now understand that the Argentine has every right to feel like his teammates are letting him down. Leo has been carrying the squad over the last five seasons and he obviously got tired of it.
The only course of action for the rest of the players if they want him to stay, is to step up their game. Sergi Roberto discussed this specific topic during an interview with ARA. It’s pretty obvious that everybody wants Messi to renew his contract and stay in Barcelona until the day he retires.
The players expected Messi’s reaction.
From hearing him talk about the issue, it’s clear the players fear Messi could leave: “I hope as the days pass he’ll begin to feel better and we can count on Leo to win trophies,” said the player.
“In the end, it’s like when you split from your wife or your best friend. They are complicated processes. Now it’s up to his team-mates to make him feel wanted.”
“I didn’t know anything. And when it came out in the news I couldn’t believe that Leo didn’t want to stay here.
“I wish it wasn’t like that. With him, we’re stronger and I’m delighted that he’s staying in the end.”
“He said he’s only staying for one more year but, if we play well and we win trophies, who knows if he’ll change his mind? If we achieve that, even better,” added Roberto.
“It’s a very complicated situation. The player looks out for his best interests and so do the club. It’s difficult to reach a balance where everyone is happy.
“In Leo’s case, it’s special. He’s been here for 20 years and given his all for this shirt.”
