Not many would have expected a certain midfielder to be starting games for Arsenal in 2020. Mohamed Elneny has defied all odds to do so.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has likened Mohamed Elneny to a new signing for Arsenal.

The Egyptian was one of the stars of the day as Arsenal clinched a rare victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Elneny spent last season on loan with Turkish giants Besiktas and was even expected to depart from Arsenal this summer.

For some reason, he stayed put at the club and Arteta has so far shown faith in him.

The 28-year-old has never been a starter since he joined the club in 2016 and has started 11 league games at the very most in a single campaign.

This season alone, Elneny already has four starts from seven league games and Paul Scholes was left impressed with Arsenal’s ‘new’ midfield marshall.

Alongside the Egyptian, the United legend also heaped praise on summer signings Thomas Partey and Gabriel Magalhaes.

“You think of Arsenal, last two or three years you’d say, they’ve been a little bit soft, a little bit disorganised,” Scholes said as quoted by Express Sport.

“I think [Arteta’s] toughened them up. They look organised today in every area of the pitch.

“The two midfield players were excellent, Partey and Elneny, he looks like a new signing really, he’s not been seen for a couple of years.

“But they were so organised, they were aggressive at times as well which you don’t usually associate with Arsenal, you don’t.

“Gabriel at the back, I thought he was excellent, the amount of times he stepped in and just took the ball off of Rashford and Greenwood.”

“It’s something United badly missed.”

Arsenal take on Aston Villa next in the Premier League and no doubt Elneny is proving indispensable for the Gunners at the moment.
