After Man United’s impressive Champions League performance, Paul Scholes took time to compare a striker to Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is arguably one of Man United’s most reliable strikers from the Alex Ferguson era. Paul Scholes shared a dressing room with him and he has only good things to say about the Dutchman. During the five seasons he played with the Red Devils, he scored an impressive 150 goals in all competitions.

That was the pre-Messi and Ronaldo era. It meant that strikers who reached these levels were considered above the rest due to how prolific they were. In fact, Ruud became one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most trusted strikers from the time.

Today, he is often used as a standard of how a Manchester United striker should perform. Paul Scholes thinks Marcus Rashford’s recent form is already reaching Van Nistelrooy levels of reliability. The young England international is having the best year of his career in all aspects, both on and off the pitch.

Scholes is wildly impressed by Rashford.

Apart from all the great charity work he’s been doing for children in his country, Rashford also has time to deliver stellar performances like the one from Wednesday. Against RB Leipzig, the Man United striker only played 19 minutes and scored a hat-trick. It was an inspiring performance that left Paul Scholes feeling like he was looking at Van Nistelrooy all over again.

“That was Van Nistelrooy-esque. You see him going through and you just know he’s smashing it into the bottom corner. It was brilliant,” said Paul on BT Sport.

“He was brilliant, you come to expect this from him. I like his ruthlessness tonight, you felt every time he went through, he was not giving the goalkeeper a chance – he was smashing it in the net.

“That was the best thing about him. His finishing has been questioned in the past, but tonight, if he sticks with that attitude, you’re looking at 25 goals this season for him.”
