The former legendary Red Devils goalkeeper has named the club’s biggest top-four rivals in the Premier League.

Arsenal are the only team that can prevent Manchester United from qualifying for next season’s Champions League, according to Peter Schmeichel.

Ralf Rangnick’s side currently sit four points above the sixth-placed Gunners in the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot in the Premier League table, although their rivals have three games in hand.

But Schmeichel thinks United have the edge over their rivals based on current form. The Dane also pointed out that while Arsenal do have games in hand, that doesn’t automatically guarantee more points.

“I think Arsenal have shown some great form,” he told BBC Radio 5.

“But actually, on current form in the last five games, Man United is a little bit better than Arsenal. It’s hard to see, but they are. I think having the points on the board rather than games in hand [is more important].”

Watford is a must-win match

Schmeichel’s right – points are always better than games in hand.

There is no telling what will happen when Arsenal play their three games against Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham. All United can do is focus on their own matches, starting this weekend.

After their trip to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, United welcome Watford to Old Trafford on Saturday.
