Sane admits to being only '80 percent' fit ahead of Bayern debut season

Leroy Sane reflects on his overwhelming year that brought him injury troubles, the coronavirus outbreak, and a big-money transfer.

For Leroy Sane, the 2019/20 season ended before it even began as he sustained a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during the last year’s Community Shield final against Liverpool.

Sane’s hopes of returning to the pitch were further obstructed when the coronavirus pandemic forced the Premier League to come to a halt in March.

The 24-year winger managed only one appearance for Manchester City, playing just fourteen minutes after coming on as a late substitute against Burnley in June, and eventually signed for Bayern Munich a month later in a transfer deal reportedly worth around €50 million.

He is currently on national duty as Germany prepare for their Nations League matches against Spain and Switzerland.

The 2017/18 PFA Young Player of the Year admits that he still hasn’t fully recovered from his knee injury but is confident that regular game time would help him reach full fitness levels.

Sane told the official DFB website: “First there was the cruciate ligament rupture, then the corona situation and, in the end, the move to Bayern Munich. It was a tough year, but a very, very good one to get to know me better personally.

“I think I’m at 80 percent,” Sane commented on his fitness. “Clearly the games and the rhythm are missing, the last percent will be added (once he gets playing regularly again).”
