After making one of Steven Gerrard’s records his own, the Egyptian now intends to put distance between himself and the Reds legend.
Mohamed Salah was on target on Wednesday night as Liverpool played out a draw against Midtjylland in their final Champions League group stage game.
The forward scored within just 55 seconds of kick-off as he intercepted a wayward back-pass before placing the ball under the rushing goalkeeper.
It was Liverpool’s quickest strike ever in the competition.
The goal also saw Salah overtake Steven Gerrard as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Champions League, with the Egyptian now on 22 goals for the Reds in the grandest club football stage.
“It’s a great feeling to be the top scorer for the club, it’s something I’m proud of,” said Salah on BT Sport after the match.
“I need to keep going with that, score more goals, make the gap bigger between me and the others! I’m trying all the time to score goals to help the team to win games.
“One of the most important goals. They played good, almost man-marked us. We scored the goal early, but they strike back, they played a good game.
“The most important thing is to qualify, it’s a game to learn [from].”
Salah has already notched up 12 strikes in 18 games across all competitions so far this season with three of those coming in the Champions League and the remaining in the Premier League.
