SAF reveals Man United’s transfer interest in Roma legend Totti

The highly-succesful former Red Devils boss tried to join forces with the ex-Italy international, but he just wasn’t interested.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his transfer interest in AS Roma legend Francesco Totti while he was still the Manchester United manager but had to drop his interest his target was “deeply attached to his city”.

Considered to be one of the greatest Italian players of all time, Totti spent all his senior career playing for Roma. He made over 78 appearances for the club between 1992 and 2017, scoring 250 goals and winning a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana twice.

The attacker was honored with a host of individual accolade throughout his career, including Serie A Footballer of the Year, European Golden Shoe, Pallone d’Argento, Golden Foot.

“We liked the player and we would have liked to include him in our plans, but when we expressed our interest, it immediately became clear that Totti didn’t want to leave Rome,” Ferguson told Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Man Utd’s Europa League semi-final clash with Roma.

“He was deeply attached to his city. His CV is clear. Totti has, in his career, only worn the Roma shirt.”
