The 2022 Ballon d’Or runner-up won’t spearhead Senegal’s quest for World Cup glory in Qatar after a leg injury ruled him out of the competition.

Sadio Mane has backed Senegal to show their grit in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The African champions will take on the Netherlands for their Group A opener on Monday. They’ll do so without Mane, whose leg injury has forced him to withdraw from the tournament.

“This Monday, our dear country will compete in the World Cup, Qatar 2022,” Mane posted on Instagram.

“I am sure the Lions will transcend and approach every game as a true final. I am also convinced that all Senegalese will be in front of the small screen to support and encourage our valiant national team.

“Like all supporters of the ‘Taniere’ [lions’ den], I am convinced that my teammates will fight as one man and as they usually do to honor our dear Senegal. Long live Senegal, come on the Lions.”

Mane, who joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool in the summer, could face several months out after having a tendon reattached to the head of his right fibula.

“Many of you have sent messages of support following my injury,” the 30-year-old attacker added.

“Thank God, the surgery I had in the middle of the week went well. I want to take this opportunity to thank and show my appreciation to you all.”
