Given the recent Champions League elimination, Arrigo Sacchi revealed the real reason Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t help Juventus.

After the third elimination in a row, Arrigo Sacchi revealed the reason Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t help Juventus. It’s been a tough three years for both the player and the institution. They spent €100 million to bring a player who is considered one of the best in the world but isn’t living up to the standards. For some reason, they thought having Cristiano Ronaldo would solve all their problems in the short-term.

To Arrigo Sacchi, signing the Portuguese star without solving the other problems Juventus has was a major mistake. Now they have to take a closer look at the issues at hand, which means they might also have to sell Ronaldo. The bottom line after this investment is that Cristiano’s transfer simply didn’t work out as they expected. Whether it’s due to the lack of great players to accompany him or the lack of a great manager, that’s for the club’s board to decide.

Sacchi even compares Ronaldo to Maradona.

In a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, this is what Sacchi said: “Football is a team sport. Ronaldo does what Ronaldo does, but if you rely only on a single player and he has a bad day, you’re in trouble. Even Diego Maradona, who was the greatest of all time, couldn’t win the European Cup by himself. As a coach, I never wanted players who were already well-known, because I was afraid they wouldn’t contribute to the team.

“Remember the Galacticos at Real Madrid? Beckham, Raul, Ronaldo, Zidane, and Figo, with Owen and Morientes on the bench. They didn’t win the Cup. What I advise Juventus to do is choose a coach who has attacking ideas, then clarify what the objectives are and work with him to choose the players who are reliable, functional to those ideas and motivated. Juve have always won in Italy, but not in Europe, where it’s a different style of football. And until they change, they will carry on not winning.”
