During an honest interview about his managerial beginnings, Ryan Giggs spoke with candor about the Manchester United job chances.
Even though Ryan Giggs might be ready to take the Manchester United job right now, there was a time when he lacked the experience. This was right after he decided to retire, but he still wanted to get the job. Back then, he truly believed he was the man destined to continue Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy without realizing he still had a lot to learn.
Manchester United’s Ed Woodward decided to bring Louis van Gaal to take the job and this didn’t sit well with Giggs. All of this happened right after David Moyes was sacked. Now that a few years have passed, Ryan is coaching the Wales National Team and he is happier than ever.
Even though there’s still an ongoing debate about his chances to take the Red Devils’ hot seat, Giggs prefers to remain patient as he was back then. But this doesn’t mean he isn’t eager to get the opportunity to coach the club of his life.
Giggs learned a lot from Louis van Gaal.
During a podcast called, ‘The Greatest Game’, Giggs said: “If I’m honest, I wanted the job [after Moyes was sacked]. But I wasn’t ready. At that time there were still a lot of the older managers coming in. They were seen as safe.
“I wanted the job when I had those four games, but I wasn’t ready. I was definitely ready after Louis [was sacked] and I wanted the job but I was nowhere near it.”
“Van Gaal was different. He was very dominating. The first time I met him he punched me in the stomach. I’ve gone to meet him, we’ve got a list of the players that I think were good and the ones that were not so good.
“I’ve gone to meet him at a hotel, he’s opened the door, looked at me up and down and gone ‘You are in good shape!’ then he punched me in the stomach. It was hard as well and I didn’t know what to do.”
