Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal with Rennes for the transfer of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The Blues look to strengthen further.
Chelsea are not done yet. After six additions this summer, Mendy could become the club’s seventh of the window.
The Rennes goalkeeper has been linked with the Blues over the past few weeks. The 28-year-old was handpicked as a target by ex-Chelsea keeper and technical and performance advisor Petr Cech.
Chelsea already had a bid of £14m already rejected by Rennes for Mendy. The West London side are expected to submit a better offer closer to an acceptable value by the Ligue 1 side.
The Athletic report that a deal is close and the Blues could sign the goalkeeper in the coming days.
In addition, Lampard is not keen on stopping his £200m summer spending spree there. West Ham’s Declan Rice remains a priority target but the Blues have Lille defensive midfielder Boubakary Soumare as an option if the former does not materialize.
Should the Mendy move go on to happen, it puts the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga at doubt.
The world’s most expensive goalkeeper was dropped by Frank Lampard for Chelsea’s final games last season.
It remains to be seen if Mendy would come in as a starter or as a backup to Kepa.
