Chelsea secured the services of Kai Havertz for £72 million, a sum far below what the German’s market valuation would have dictated in normal circumstances.

European football has been jolted by the coronavirus pandemic. While clubs have become extremely prudent in their expenses, Chelsea have splashed cash.

As many as six first-team additions have been made by the Blues. Kai Havertz and Time Werner have been procured from Germany. Meanwhile Malanga Sarr and Thiago Silva have arrived from Ligue 1.

Rudi Voller came across his Chelsea counterparts in these deals and believe the Londoners have struck gold with their markey forays.

Voller pointed out Havertz £72 million deal which can rise to £90 million with add-ons. The Germany legend believes Chelsea will pay £100 million less than Havertz’s real worth.

“[Chelsea] simply made good use of the coronavirus period,” Voller told Bild

“Next year it would have been much harder for Chelsea to get Kai. [Other interested teams] preferred to hold back because of the high transfer fee in this special and uncertain time.”

“We also have significant revenue losses in times of the coronavirus.

“We will, of course, take that into account and certainly not completely reinvest the transfer fee we got for Kai Havertz.

“Although we still have to do something to maintain the level or to improve.”

Chelsea are primed for Premier League title challenge, with Frank Lampard admitting the pressure is on him to deliver.
