The seven-time Premier League winner offered his verdict on the upcoming title battle.

Roy Keane has backed Manchester City to retain their Premier League crown for the 2022/23 campaign.

The Citizens have been busy over the summer by signing striker Erling Haaland and midfielder Kalvin Phillips while selling forwards Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus to rivals Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

Chelsea, Tottenham, and Arsenal have also welcomed some new impressive players to their ranks.

But Keane doubts it will be enough to overthrow Manchester City and Liverpool’s dominance at the top of the table.

“I don’t think they will close the gap,” the former Manchester United captain told Sky Bet.

“I think they will be a bit better. They have quality and the recruitment, but you can’t look beyond Liverpool and Man City.”

On his tip to win the Premier League, Keane said: “Man City. Brilliant players, they’ve obviously improved with an unbelievable striker [Haaland] and they’ve got one of the greatest managers ever in Pep [Guardiola].”

Man Utd out of title battle…for now

Manchester United have undergone some big changes this summer.

Erik ten Hag has become the club’s new manager after an impressive spell at Ajax while several players, including Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, have left.

A 4-0 friendly win over Liverpool on Tuesday was a good start for Ten Hag’s side, but Keane thinks it’s a little early to get too carried away.

He added: “The manager no doubt will be given money to spend, how he recruits, four or five experienced players have left the club, which I think is a good thing.

“But I still don’t see United competing with Liverpool and Manchester City, not just yet.”
